Members of the Cardiopulmonary Systems technical committee are organizing various sessions in the upcoming EMBC’19 in Berlin, Germany. This includes a full-day workshop, “Cardiorespiratory physiology and modeling with clinical applications” on Tuesday 23 July. This workshop covers cardiovascular and respiratory physiology, mathematical modeling and the use of simulation models to aid in the understanding of the normo- and patho-physiology of the heart, the lungs, and their interactions. The workshop is given by experts in the field and is geared toward undergraduate and graduate students entering the field of cardiorespiratory systems engineering.
Other Theme-5 sessions include a series of 3 mini-symposia sessions on State-of-the-art advances in Sleep Health Science and Technology, a series of 2 mini-symposia on Recent Advances on Cuff-Less Blood Pressure Measurement Technology and an invited session on Identification of Cardiopulmonary Function. Professor Ann Humeau-Heurtier, Université d’Angers coauthored a recently published article in the IEEE Journal of Biomedical and Health Informatics, entitled Multichannel Time-Frequency Complexity Measures for the Analysis of Age-Related Changes in Neuromagnetic Resting-State Activity. The authors propose new multichannel time-frequency complexity measures to evaluate differences on magnetoencephalograpy (MEG) recordings between healthy young and old subjects at rest at different spatial scales. They showed that these features are able to reveal regional clusters. The multichannel time-frequency complexities can be used to monitor the aging of subjects. They also allow a mutual information approach, and could be applied to a wider range of problems.
Professor Ricardo Armentano, member of the IEEE Argentina Section and our Cardiopulmonary Systems TC, has been awarded the Eminent Engineer Award of IEEE Latin America Region for findings in the field of quantitative hemodynamics and mechanobiology of the cardiovascular system, from fundamental fundamentals to applications in clinical practice. This award is a recognition for those members belonging to any of the Sections of the Latin American Region, that have contributed significantly to the promotion and aggrandizement of the professional disciplines that are part of the IEEE. A book titled “Biomechanical Modeling of the Cardiovascular System” by Dr. Ricardo Armentano and his coauthers aims to become a key research handbook for the students and practitioners in the field of Cardiovascular Engineering.
